Is Corey Still At Animal Adventure Park

All eyes remain on April the giraffe as she waits to deliver her baby at Animal Adventure in Harpursville.

On a biting cold Mon morning, secondary giraffe keeper Corey Dwyer follows his daily routine. He scatters a scattering of fresh hay in April'due south stall of Animate being Take a chance Park's lofty giraffe barn in Harpursville.

He'll laissez passer a hand over the slope of the 16-foot international superstar'south bulging side and and so maybe gently pat her stomach and chance a glance up to the corner of the barn, where a pocket-sized black fixture, no bigger than a spot on April's cervix, is strapped to a wooden beam with several layers of clear packing record.

The device is hooked up to a laptop on tiptop of a makeshift desk created out of a trash can they found in park storage and it'due south plugged into a ability outlet on the wall beside it. Another thinner blackness cord travels from the device to the pinnacle of the barn and out to where an antenna was attached last calendar month, giving the barn wifi.

Information technology's silent inside the befouled only for the slow scraping sound of the tortoises on the other side of the balcony, slowly and slightly moving around in their enclosure, and Dwyer's the only person inside.

But in that very moment, the unassuming fixture on the balustrade is digitally transporting 100,000 people directly into April's stall.

Instant fame

In the past calendar month, Creature Adventure's live stream of Apr awaiting labor on YouTube has been viewed over 70 million times. Viewers have tuned in from all across the United States as well as Canada, the United Kingdom, Commonwealth of australia, Netherlands, Germany, New Zealand, Sweden, Spain, Finland, Republic of ireland, Mexico, Belgium, France and Kingdom of norway, according to park officials.

In a live chat, Dwyer has fielded questions from people in Africa and Russian federation.

Park owner Hashemite kingdom of jordan Patch has been interviewed by national and global news outlets.

Scott Swinamer, left, and Michael Sands, right, take photos and video of April the pregnant giraffe for RVSA Advertising at Animal Adventure in Harpursville on Monday, March 17, 2017.

Actor Tom Hiddleston has narrated her livestream, James Corden mentioned her in his opening monologue on "The Tardily Late Bear witness," and the BBC called April'southward calf the most anticipated nascency since England's Prince George was born in 2013.

Equally of Saturday, the livestream video of a 15-year-old giraffe not even so giving birth had been viewed for i,842,720,375 minutes total, Patch said.

"She'due south definitely a superstar," Dwyer said Monday. "She's a sweetheart."

But with all the attention, park officials say it hasn't changed a thing about how the park, entering its fifth season, operates.

"It really doesn't alter for usa," Dwyer said. "We still get in and do our normal routines."

That plus a few extra hundreds of emails, Facebook comments and phone calls each twenty-four hour period.

Close to home

When Jordan Patch bought the 20-acre sloping stretch of land and opened the doors to Animal Adventure in 2013, he hoped he'd have a giraffe in the park past the fourth dimension the park was 5 years onetime.

At present inbound its fifth season, the park will soon exist home to three giraffes. It's been a labor of dear for every member of the relatively pocket-sized staff at the park, a few dozen who work on the park's many exhibits in the summer months, with a handful dedicated to giraffe intendance.

This group, which includes Dwyer, Patch and giraffe keeper Alyssa Swilley, are the ones who've set upward cots to slumber in the giraffe barn when they accept overnight labor-check shifts. They're the ones whose hands you see occasionally feeding a carrot or a leafage of lettuce to Apr, right upwards shut to the web cam. Dwyer and Swilley are talking about getting tattoos when Apr'southward dogie is built-in. They're not sure what of even so, maybe the birth date? Possibly hoof prints?

"This is big," Dwyer said.

Backside the small staff is Patch's driving force and goal for the park: to be a source of education.

Continuing to teach

Each year, the park welcomes families to feed a giraffe up shut and watch a water buffalo saunter upwardly through a pond, but educational activity is entrenched in the gravel path throughout the park. In that location are wandering keeper talks, camel demonstrations and activities.

For this park, the birth of a giraffe calf on site isn't just a gimmick.

All eyes remain on April the giraffe as she waits to deliver her baby at Animal Adventure in Harpursville.

In Dec, scientists added giraffes to the list of threatened and endangered animals, co-ordinate to the International Wedlock for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), listing them as "vulnerable to extinction."

"It sheds a larger and stronger lite on our efforts to brainwash, and the work we exercise every day, to ensure happy and good for you lives for our animals," Patch said.

When Patch answered questions on the YouTube page's live chat, he had the opportunity to share information on giraffe gestation, the size of a giraffe calf, how long April'south been at the park — since September 2015 — and whether this is her first calf — information technology's her fourth or 5th, Patch said.

"Information technology's an fantabulous educational tool," he said in a previous interview. "Information technology sends out that mission we have."

When April does give nascence, there will not be a swarm of worldwide media packing the barn and crowding her infinite. And the hours of sifting through emails from strangers — friendly and otherwise — the extra security precautions they've had to implement and upstate New York weather occasionally sending the live stream temporarily offline will exist forgotten for a moment.

There will be the same five or six people who've kept careful scout over her since she moved in at the park in 2015.

"At the end of the day, it is axiomatic to our guests that visit and our watchers on YouTube, that the animals are loved, they are cared for, they are part of our family," Patch said. "The park was successful before this, it will exist after this, so we stay grounded and stay focused on what matters. Everything else is a distraction."
